I’ve seen a lot of negative posts towards several people who are using the Internet for fundraising for their eating disorder care so I wanted to clear something up for you guys.
To the point that these people may have an iPhone or a laptop or Internet or whatever so why can’t they afford treatment: chances are their parents/they were not budgeting for eating disorder treatment. nobody expects their child to fall mentally ill so if they bought them an iPhone two months ago why is that invalidation of their financial limitations. secondly: ONE DAY of eating disorder treatment costs over twice as much as an iPhone. the average cost of residential eating disorder treatment is $1500 a day and for day treatment it ranges from $700-1100 a day. insurance often does not cover eating disorder/mental health treatment and a lot of people do not have insurance. the minimum recommended stay in an eating disorder residential hospital is 30 days so it adds up pretty quick.
PLEASE do not invalidate those who are blogging about their eating disorder struggles online/question their diagnoses or the validity of their disease, it is the most harmful thing for their mental health and may cause them to act out/do more behaviors to order to validate their pain
if you don’t want to donate or reblog to help these people fine but please do not try to question what their going through and try to understand that nobody plans for their child fall ill and eating disorder care is EXTREMELY costly and ultimately life saving and very necessary. eating disorders have the highest death rate of all mental illnesses!!!
